When buying furniture, most people ask one question:
“Is it solid wood?”
It’s a good question but it is not really the only story about the material we use to build. The more useful question is:
What’s underneath the surface?
A piece could be solid wood, plywood, MDF, or p article board. Each behaves differently, lasts differently, and can be repaired differently. None of these materials is inherently “good” or “bad.” They simply serve different purposes. Knowing the difference helps you buy furniture that matches your budget and expectations.

The answer depends on what you want. If you’re looking for furniture that can last decades and be repaired repeatedly, solid wood is the best option. If you want wide tabletops or cabinet sides without the movement that comes with large pieces of timber, veneer is often the better construction method. What Is Solid Wood?
Solid wood is exactly what it sounds like—natural timber from the surface to the centre.
Because the wood is continuous, it can be shaped, sanded, refinished and repaired many times over its lifetime. Traditional joinery such as mortise-and-tenon and dovetail joints are designed specifically for solid timber.
Wood naturally expands and contracts with seasonal humidity, but good construction allows for this movement. For furniture intended to last for decades, solid wood remains the benchmark.
What Is Veneer?
Veneer is often misunderstood. It isn’t fake wood. A veneer is a thin slice of real timber—usually under 3 mm thick and bonded to another material. What Is MDF?
Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is made by compressing fine wood fibres with resin under heat into a dense, uniform board. Because there is no natural grain, MDF has a smooth surface that’s excellent for painted finishes and decorative mouldings. Its consistency is one of its biggest strengths. Unlike solid timber, it doesn’t move with the grain, making it ideal for large painted panels.
Its limitations are mostly structural. Repeated stress can loosen screws because there are no continuous wood fibres for them to grip, and exposure to water can cause the edges to swell permanently. That doesn’t make MDF poor quality—it simply makes it better suited to certain applications than others.
What Is Particle Board?
Particle board is another engineered wood product, but it differs from MDF. Instead of fine fibres, it uses larger wood chips and sawdust bonded together with resin. It’s lighter, less dense and generally less durable than MDF. It also holds screws less effectively and is more vulnerable to moisture. Most budget flat-pack furniture is built from particle board because it offers the lowest manufacturing cost.
How Can You Tell What’s Underneath?
The easiest place to check isn’t the visible surface. Look underneath a tabletop, inside a drawer, behind a cabinet or anywhere the manufacturer hasn’t applied a decorative finish.
Here’s what you’ll see:
• Solid wood: Continuous natural grain.
• Plywood: Thin layers of wood visible at the cut edge.
• MDF: A smooth, uniform, fibrous texture with no grain.
• Particle board: Visible wood chips and a rougher texture.
Weight isn’t a reliable indicator. MDF is extremely dense and can feel just as heavy as solid timber. Joinery often provides a better clue. Traditional mortise-and-tenon or dovetail joints usually indicate solid wood, while MDF and particle board furniture more commonly rely on cam locks, brackets and glued dowels.
Which Material Lasts the Longest?

High-quality veneer over plywood can also be repaired in many cases. MDF and particle board are different. Cosmetic damage can usually be fixed, but once the board itself swells, strips around screws or breaks structurally, repairs become much more difficult because there isn’t solid timber underneath to rebuild.
